Review

Gary Walsh 96/100

Black and blue fruit, iodine, mocha, baking spice and ginger biscuits. Full-bodied, incredibly dense and chewy, with masses of graphite tannin rolling through sweet dark fruit and high quality oak. So much power of fruit, and tannin, and assertive winemaking overlay, but so compelling. Finish is very long, slick with tannin, and juicy perfumed black fruit. Fortune favours the Brave, surely.

Tasting Notes

palate

Seamless with black and blue fruits, great floral notes, structural silky tannins working in harmony for a long, balanced finish.

vinification

We hand-harvested grapes during cool morning hours, at an average Brix of 26.5°. The wine was fermented in stainless steel and then underwent native malolactic fermentation in barrels to round acidity and softly integrate the vanillin character of French oak (87% new).

vintage notes

For the 2016 harvest, we had an almost perfect spring, the growing conditions during the summer had minor extremes and the ripening period was almost as ideal. September had a brief late heat spike and a touch of rain fell in October, rounding out a great season. The Cabernet Sauvignon harvested from this vintage is a fantastic example of a Bordeaux style blend hitting all the right notes.

grape variety

86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot, 2% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot

region notes

High-elevation winegrowing requires a painstaking, labor intensive approach. Thin, rocky soils and steep slopes make water retention a challenge and erosion a threat, but the vines benefit from the struggle and produce concentrated flavours. The high altitude keeps midday temperatures cooler than those in the valley below, while the position above the fog line gives grapes longer daily exposure to sunlight. This regularly extends the growing season into November, and the increased hang-time results in peak ripeness and full varietal complexity.

Buying At Auction?

Your Questions, Answered

What do you need from me to get started?

We will need you to confirm that you are over 18 (for obvious reasons!) and to open an account by registering on the site. This will include provision of credit card details for any eventual purchases. You will also need to sign that you have read the terms and conditions.

How many wines are in each Lot?

You will see the quantity (number of bottles) stated above the price. Please note that the bid-price is per bottle so you will need to multiply the price by the number of bottles in the lot to calculate the total price of the lot.

Can I cancel my bid if I change my mind?

All bids are final - please think before you confirm your bid.

How much is the Buyers' Commission?

We have an extremely competitive buyers' commission of 16.5% (GST inclusive). This will be added to the final winning price of your Lot at the end of the auction.

What are your freight charges?

Please see our Delivery Policy for full details relating to freight.

Is there a Guarantee on my wine?

Under Australian law, consumer guarantees do not apply to goods purchased at auction - all such purchases are at the risk of the Buyer. We will always provide as much detail as we can as to the visual condition and provenance of each Lot, however this is done so as a guide rather than as a guarantee.
