Domaine Olivier Merlin
Often called the "Wizard of the Mâconnais," Olivier Merlin is one of the most respected figures in southern Burgundy. His estate is a benchmark for quality, proving that the Mâconnais can produce wines with the same precision and aging potential as the more famous villages of the Côte d'Or.
The History: From California to Mâcon
Unlike many storied Burgundy domains, Olivier Merlin did not inherit a family estate. His journey began with a passion for the craft:
-
The Foundation (1987): After studying oenology and gaining experience in California’s Napa Valley, Olivier and his wife Corinne purchased the Domaine du Vieux Saint-Sorlin in La Roche-Vineuse. They started with just 4.5 hectares and a vision to restore the reputation of their local terroir.
-
Expansion & Prestige: Over three decades, they carefully expanded to roughly 20-25 hectares. A major milestone occurred in 2012 when Olivier partnered with the legendary Dominique Lafon to acquire the prestigious Clos des Quarts monopole in Chaintré.
-
The Next Generation: In 2017, the family legacy was secured as their sons, Paul and Théo, joined the winery, bringing fresh energy while maintaining the estate’s artisanal standards.
The Style & Philosophy
Merlin’s wines are defined by balance, purity, and transparency. He treats his Mâconnais fruit with the same reverence usually reserved for Grand Crus:
-
In the Vineyard: The family practices meticulous soil work and manual harvesting. They avoid chemicals and focus on the health of old vines (some 80+ years old) to ensure the limestone minerality of the region shines through.
-
In the Cellar: Winemaking is traditional—whole-cluster pressing and long fermentations in oak barrels, using very little new oak to ensure the fruit and "flinty" terroir remain the stars.
-
Key Wines: While famous for his Pouilly-Fuissé (including several newly minted 1er Crus like Sur la Roche), his Mâcon-La Roche Vineuse Vieilles Vignes remains the flagship—a wine that consistently punches far above its "village" classification.
