The wine is composed of a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and 15% Merlot. Very deep brick colour with brick red hue. Aroma of stewed fruit, cedar and spice, displaying excellent complex notes. Again the palate displays excellent complexity showing what a superb drink Cabernet can be. Cedar, blackcurrant, long spicy raspberry and mulberry overlays, followed by a very spicy back palate. Perfect balance. Outstanding length and depth. A wine that points the way forward for many lost Australian Cabernet producers.

Grape Variety

65% cabernet sauvignon, 20% cabernet franc and 15% merlot grown on the Henschke Eden Valley vineyard. T

Maturation

Matured in new and seasoned French hogsheads for 18 months prior to blending and  bottling. Bottle aged at Henschke Cellars in Keyneton for museum release. Background This wine carries the name of Stephen’s father, Cyril Henschke (1924-1979), as a tribute to one of Australia’s outstanding winemaking pioneers, renowned for old-vine single-vineyard and quality varietal table wines. Cyril planted cabernet sauvignon at Henschke’s Eden Valley vineyard in the 1960s.

Vintage Description

The 2001 season began with good winter and spring rains, although there were some isolated black frost  pockets in October. Good set at flowering continued on to one of our hottest  summers on record. Occasional timely thunderstorms arrived to maintain the humidity with a few millimetres of wonderful rain. Vintage began two to three weeks early but the heat had the potential to reduce flavours and produce high pHs and frighteningly low acids. With the arrival of milder autumnal weather came a natural rebalancing, providing only average yields but excellent whites and exceptional reds.

Wine Description

Brick red in colour. Alluring, sweet aromas of black and red currants are complemented by  savoury hints of beef stock, cigar box, leather and dried herbs. Concentrated dark berry and plum flavours on the entry are balanced with mid-palate nuances of smoked meats and charred French oak supports, fine acidity and mature tannins for a rich and elegant finish.

Buying At Auction?

Your Questions, Answered

What do you need from me to get started?

We will need you to confirm that you are over 18 (for obvious reasons!) and to open an account by registering on the site. This will include provision of credit card details for any eventual purchases. You will also need to sign that you have read the terms and conditions.

How many wines are in each Lot?

You will see the quantity (number of bottles) stated above the price. Please note that the bid-price is per bottle so you will need to multiply the price by the number of bottles in the lot to calculate the total price of the lot.

Can I cancel my bid if I change my mind?

All bids are final - please think before you confirm your bid.

How much is the Buyers' Commission?

We have an extremely competitive buyers' commission of 16.5% (GST inclusive). This will be added to the final winning price of your Lot at the end of the auction.

What are your freight charges?

Please see our Delivery Policy for full details relating to freight.

Is there a Guarantee on my wine?

Under Australian law, consumer guarantees do not apply to goods purchased at auction - all such purchases are at the risk of the Buyer. We will always provide as much detail as we can as to the visual condition and provenance of each Lot, however this is done so as a guide rather than as a guarantee.
