Yecla

Yecla is a Denominación de Origen (DO, or designation of origin) wine region in southeastern Spain. Established in 1975, the Yecla DO lies in the northernmost corner of the region of Murcia and is surrounded by other Dos Jumilla DO to the south and west, Almansa DO to the north and Alicante DO to the east. Yecla is split into two subzones—Yecla Campo Arriba, which tends to produce grapes and wines with the most concentration, and Yecla Campo Abajo, which is noted for its excellent white wines. Lying between 400 m and 800 m above sea level, Yecla has 6,500 hectares under vine on limestone-rich soils perfect for grape-growing. Here we are deep in Monastrell country, and although many different varieties are planted within the DO, it is Monastrell that seems to produce the finest wines.
- Key Varieties: Monastrell.
- Climate: Mediterranean / Continental.
- Soil: Sandy topsoil, with a high carbonate content subsoil.
- Did You Know: Wine has been produced in Yecla since Phoenician times' before the Romans.
