Bicheno

Bicheno

Bicheno is a wine-growing area on the north-eastern coast of Tasmania, Australia. Bicheno is a small coastal town located approximately 180 kilometres north of Hobart at the northern end of the unofficial east coast subregion of Tasmania. Unusually, Tasmania as an AGI (Australian Geographical Indication - similar to the European Designation of Origin system) is not broken down further into zones or regions. Vineyards here benefit from a mild climate, with long hours of sunlight. Their location within the famous Freycinet Amphitheatre-ich protects them from winds and other potentially extreme weather events - a major contributor to their reputation as producers of very high quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

  • Key Varieties: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir
  • Climate: Mild, cool, long hours of sunlight
  • Soil: Generally granitic with high iron content
  • Did You Know: After coal was discovered in the region, for one year, the Wauba Harbour in Bicheno began providing port facilities for the coal mines in Denison River. Then, in 1855, the discovery of gold across the Bass Strait in Victoria caused the departure of most residents to the mainland, leaving the region largely unpopulated for nearly a century.
