The 2018 Caley exemplifies the blend of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and Barossa Shiraz, showing beautifully defined aromatics, richness and concentration and represents a wine for the cellar. Very deep, dense red. Showcasing expressive, fragrant aromatics of blackcurrant and dark cherry with cool iodine notes merging into savoury, leafy hints, all typical Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. A defined, composed and very inviting wine with succulent Shiraz throughout. Medium to full depth with a densely layered structure delivering a prominent yet silky tannin profile. The Caley will take time to reveal its true character, while drinking beautifully on release this wine will live on for decades in the cellar 15 years +

VINTAGE CONDITIONS
Coonawarra: Winter and spring rainfall was above average, replenishing soil moisture and aquifers. Spring and summer were warm. The famous Bonney upwelling played its part; cooling March temperatures to deliver us fruit with fine tannins, natural acidity and strong varietal flavours.
Barossa: A wet winter was followed by a drier than average spring. Summer saw warm, dry days with cool nights ripening the grapes while maintaining freshness and natural acidity. The balmy long summer of early March helped complete the ripening of these perfectly balanced and flavoured grapes.

TERROIR/PROVENANCE/REGION
The Ming D block in the Yalumba Coonawarra vineyard provides the 80% Cabernet Sauvignon of this blend. This 2.7 ha plot was planted in 1992 with two clones of Cabernet Sauvignon selected for structure and depth of flavour. The Caley’s 20% Shiraz component was sourced from two Barossa blocks. The first from the Horseshoe Vineyard on the
southern side of the Yalumba winery in Eden Valley. Planted by Helen Hill-Smith in 1971, this block follows the contours around the Fred Caley Smith Hut. The second block is the Burgemeister “Linke” block planted in 1901 at Light Pass.

Buying At Auction?

Your Questions, Answered

What do you need from me to get started?

We will need you to confirm that you are over 18 (for obvious reasons!) and to open an account by registering on the site. This will include provision of credit card details for any eventual purchases. You will also need to sign that you have read the terms and conditions.

How many wines are in each Lot?

You will see the quantity (number of bottles) stated above the price. Please note that the bid-price is per bottle so you will need to multiply the price by the number of bottles in the lot to calculate the total price of the lot.

Can I cancel my bid if I change my mind?

All bids are final - please think before you confirm your bid.

How much is the Buyers' Commission?

We have an extremely competitive buyers' commission of 16.5% (GST inclusive). This will be added to the final winning price of your Lot at the end of the auction.

What are your freight charges?

Please see our Delivery Policy for full details relating to freight.

Is there a Guarantee on my wine?

Under Australian law, consumer guarantees do not apply to goods purchased at auction - all such purchases are at the risk of the Buyer. We will always provide as much detail as we can as to the visual condition and provenance of each Lot, however this is done so as a guide rather than as a guarantee.
