97/100 - Huon Hooke

Medium-deep colour with a tinge of purple still remaining at seven years of age. Blackberry, black olive, tar, forest-floor and licorice aromas, a note of roasting meats emerging with age. Very intense and well concentrated palate flavour, deep and long with masses of supple, velvety tannins. Lovely, cuddly middle-aged Barossa shiraz, starting to drink at its peak now.

The 2017 Rockford Basket Press Shiraz is an iconic, full-bodied Australian red from the Barossa Valley, known for its classic old-school style with intense dark fruit (blackberry, plum), spicy complexity (pepper, licorice, clove), and hints of oak and earth, offering velvety tannins and a long finish, representing a significant release from an esteemed producer that's now entering its prime drinking window.

Key Characteristics:
Region: Barossa Valley, Australia.
  • Grape: Shiraz.
  • Style: Traditional, full-bodied, rich, and complex.
  • Tasting Notes: Dark berries, black pepper, plum, licorice, cedar, vanilla, tobacco, and roasting meats.
  • Texture: Velvety, with firm, well-integrated tannins.
  • Aging: Excellent aging potential; currently developing beautifully, often needing decanting or cellar time to soften.
Drinking & Cellaring
This vintage is considered a standout and is in a great spot to drink now but will continue to evolve in the cellar for years to come.
  • Decanting for a few hours can help open it up, revealing layers of complexity.

"Rockford can only be described as an icon, no matter how overused that word may be."  James Halliday

Rockford Basket Press Shiraz, like Penfolds Grange, is one of Australia’s most collected and most cherished red wines. Fruit is sourced from some of the best old Barossa vineyards with vine age from 60 to 130 years.

Buying At Auction?

Your Questions, Answered

What do you need from me to get started?

We will need you to confirm that you are over 18 (for obvious reasons!) and to open an account by registering on the site. This will include provision of credit card details for any eventual purchases. You will also need to sign that you have read the terms and conditions.

How many wines are in each Lot?

You will see the quantity (number of bottles) stated above the price. Please note that the bid-price is per bottle so you will need to multiply the price by the number of bottles in the lot to calculate the total price of the lot.

Can I cancel my bid if I change my mind?

All bids are final - please think before you confirm your bid.

How much is the Buyers' Commission?

We have an extremely competitive buyers' commission of 16.5% (GST inclusive). This will be added to the final winning price of your Lot at the end of the auction.

What are your freight charges?

Please see our Delivery Policy for full details relating to freight.

Is there a Guarantee on my wine?

Under Australian law, consumer guarantees do not apply to goods purchased at auction - all such purchases are at the risk of the Buyer. We will always provide as much detail as we can as to the visual condition and provenance of each Lot, however this is done so as a guide rather than as a guarantee.
