96 points, Tyson Stelzer - The 2011 Teusner Righteous Mataro Museum Release is a rare, cellar-aged expression of Barossa Valley Mataro (Mourvèdre), showcasing the variety’s remarkable ability to evolve and gain complexity with time. Deep garnet in color with a faint brick rim, it offers an enticing bouquet of dried blackberry, black cherry, dark plum, and hints of smoked meats, lifted by nuances of cedar, anise, dried herbs, and earthy leather.

The palate is powerful yet refined, unfolding layers of dark fruits, black olive, mocha, and five-spice, supported by supple, integrated tannins and a bright acidity that keeps the wine vibrant despite its age. The finish is long and savoury, with lingering notes of wild game, dried fig, and warm spice.

This museum release is a testament to Teusner’s commitment to crafting wines of intensity, character, and longevity. Perfect for lovers of bold, complex reds seeking a distinctive addition to their cellar.

From a single vineyard in Moppa, this wine was aged 18 months in 30% new French oak, the rest in a mixture of older barrels, and offered in the same heavy bottle as its namesake shiraz. This is reined-in, the sweet fruit expressive, a floral lift and a touch of eucalypt with savoury layers across the full-bodied palate of salumi, coffee grounds, wood smoke and iron. Certainly, it is rich and ripe but holds its 15% alcohol well, everything integrated.

Food Pairing Suggestions

This mature Barossa Mataro pairs beautifully with slow-cooked lamb shanks, braised beef cheeks, chargrilled venison, wild mushroom risotto, or aged hard cheeses. Its evolved flavors complement rich, hearty dishes and game meats.

Product Reviews

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ James Halliday Wine Companion:
“From a challenging vintage comes a truly impressive result. Deeply concentrated with signature Barossa Mataro spice, dried dark fruit, and remarkable balance after over a decade in bottle. Drink now or hold another 5+ years.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Cellar Link Auctions Buyer Review:
“This wine is everything you want from an aged Mataro — earthy, spicy, and silky, with layers that unfold beautifully over hours in the glass. A stunning example of Teusner’s top-tier craftsmanship.”

“The first release of our top level Mataro was in 2006 and again in the excellent 2009 vintage....this same vineyard has blown us away and made it into the 2011 Teusner Righteous Mataro.
It’s a “fruit salad” vineyard .....an old-school, Barossan mixed planting....predominately Grenache but if you look closely, amongst those floppy Grenache vines you’ll see about every fourth vine has slightly different coloured leaves and stands up straighter....these are the Mataro vines that the Roennfeldt family pick separately for us Planted in the Marananga sub-region in the 1930's on redbrown loams over clay, the 0.3ha Roennfeldt Dirks Block vineyard lies in a fairly flat section with a North/South orientation.
The fruit is hand-picked and goes through fermentation in open-vats before being aged for two years in oak – 30% new oak (50% French/50% American) and 70% old oak which is a blend, again, of French and American. It then makes its way to bottle without fining or filtration and with minimal Sulphur.”
